TransUnion CIBIL or Equifax: which report should you check?
Both are RBI-licensed bureaus and both score you from 300 to 900. Lenders decide which bureau they check, so the loan you want is a good guide to the report you should look at first.
300–900TransUnion CIBIL
India’s oldest and most widely used credit bureau
TransUnion CIBIL started in 2000 as Credit Information Bureau (India) Limited and is the bureau most Indian banks check first. Your CIBIL Score is a three-digit number from 300 to 900 that sums up how you have handled loans and credit cards.
Loans commonly assessed with TransUnion CIBIL reports
- Home Loan
Banks and housing finance companies almost always pull a CIBIL report for home loans; 750+ unlocks the lowest rates.
- Personal Loan
Unsecured, so the CIBIL Score carries the most weight. Most banks want 700 to 750 or more.
- Loan Against Property
Large secured loans where lenders check CIBIL for repayment history across all your accounts.
- Car Loan
Dealer-tied bank and NBFC finance is usually approved on a CIBIL check within a day.
- Mortgage Loan
Lenders look at the age of your credit and any settled or written-off accounts on your CIBIL report.

Equifax
Widely used by NBFCs, digital lenders and microfinance institutions
Equifax is one of the four credit bureaus licensed by the RBI. Its Indian arm has been operating since 2010 and holds both a consumer bureau and one of the largest microfinance databases in the country, so it is checked heavily by NBFCs, fintech lenders and small-ticket lenders.
Loans commonly assessed with Equifax reports
- Personal Loan
Many NBFCs and app-based lenders decide quick personal loans on an Equifax report.
- Business Loan
SME and working-capital lenders often combine your Equifax consumer report with your business credit history.
- Professional Loan
Loans for doctors, CAs and other professionals are commonly assessed by NBFCs that use Equifax.
- Car Loan
NBFC-financed vehicle loans, including used-car finance, frequently run an Equifax check.
- Mortgage Loan
Housing finance companies may check Equifax alongside CIBIL for a fuller picture of your repayments.
Lenders may also check Experian and CRIF High Mark. Good habits improve your score at every bureau: pay on time, keep card balances under 30% of the limit, and apply only when you need to.
